We should start calling "mid-size" trucks "1/3 ton" pickups.

“ Mid sized” is stupid because there isn’t any trucks for sale under them for them to be a middle anything. Third ton isn’t accurate but none of the “ton” designations are literal any longer and better describe the ratios between the truck classes. Most mid size trucks have about 2/3 the payload of a full size truck, and 2/3 of 1/2 is a third. This also leaves room for the compact truck to return as quarter ton trucks.

What do you think?

IDK, my 93 4.0 Ranger has a GVWR of 4750; that makes it a half ton pickup

I don’t think expanding on the stupid and obsolete “ton” system is a solution to anything.

Obviously the real solution is small pickups. But failing that, I’m sure we can come up with a term that doesn’t involve us going from one term that doesn’t make sense to another term that also doesn’t make sense.

All of the Rangers in Aus are rated for more than a tonne. Is there any physical difference in the truck  or just differing ratings standards?

Nah, just an old fashioned way of describing truck classes. It more describes payload ratios at this point, a 3/4 ton can hold 50% more than a 1/2 ton even though it’s more like 1 ton and a 1.5 ton in modern trucks

Oh yeah, the literal designations no longer apply but the ratios still do. A modern half ton does a little over 1 ton in payload and the 250 and 2500 versions do 50% to 100% above that.

why not just name them whats on the tin? a 1 ton should have a payload capacity of at least 1 ton.
Midsize might seem dumb in the modern market, but just because you can’t buy one brand new doesn’t mean all of the old small trucks are now off the road.

Just bought an old Ranger, cheap, runs like a proverbial top, gets the job done.

The Ranger is like that one friend who does everything with you. They’ll go out to get a drink with you. They’ll help cheer you up when you’re a bit down. More importantly, they’re one of the first people you think of when you need a job done that requires more than one person.

Just because Ford killed the Focus doesn’t mean the Fusion is suddenly not mid-size .

Trucks have different payload rating depending on cab configuration, bed length, engine choice, gearing, and whether you got the heavy duty spring package or not. There would be 500 different trucks available from every manufacturer if they put the payload rating in the name, and they would change every few years.

I didn’t mean ‘in the name’. Just how it’s classed should match its capacity, not some arbitrary rating that mate sense 30 years ago

If we called trucks by their actual rated payload capacity, a new 2019 Ranger would be a 3/4 ton pickup. My old ‘97 F-250HD would be a 2 ton truck. A new F-350 dually would be a 3-1/2 ton truck.

Well a modern mid size car is a lot bigger than a mid size car from the 80s, but we still call it a mid size car because that’s where it stands in the market. The ‘half ton’ class might not be anywh ere near representative of what the truck can do, but the light duty and heavy duty trucks all compete pretty closely with each other in their segment .

yeah but light duty, medium duty and heavy duty all work as the scale can change with time .
1/2 ton for something that can actually do 1 ton is a bit silly. That’s where I’m getting at. If you’re gonna call it after a payload then call it after a payload. Otherwise stick to small, medium large and state it’s payload in the brochure (especially so as I fully understand it changes based on trim ) .

and I’d be okay with that, even though the Ranger can do 1 Tonne in my country, which is even more than a Ton .

Well that’s why Ford c alls the F-150 a light duty truck, and the F-250 and up Super Duty, and GM and Ram call 2500+ trucks Heavy Duty. But according to the government, the 150/1500 trucks are Class 2 trucks , the HD trucks are Class 3 and anything above 14,000 lbs GVWR is a medium duty truck (the scale goes up to class 9 trucks, above big rigs ).
